Upon returning from my lunch meeting last week, I noticed a new icon on my Facebook profile asking me if I wanted to start using Graph Search, and of course, I canceled my next meeting and started to geek out! Below you will find screen shots from the tutorial & search functions. From an intelligence gathering perspective you need to have this!

Graph Search Begins

The tutorial show an example broad search term. Just like Google‘s keyword recommendations, when searching for “Redmond High School” other search options are displayed.

The tutorial moves on to show an example that allows me to search my social graphic for a more exact request. Based on the type of search (my friends who), additional keyword options are displayed. Notice that I can ask Facebook to show me my friends who went to Redmond High School before 2012 or after 2012, how cool is that? How will you search your social graph?

Then, my friends appear on result listings. My lucky friend Dianna Johnson, now SEO celebrity, was chosen by the tutorial. Relevant information about my friends is displayed. I wonder if the information that is displayed would change if I searched for “Friends in Redmond who like Opera”

Graph search allows us to search different categories of content that we have engaged with. I wonder what type of sponsored content I will be able to place in the Games or Music category!

On the right side of a Social Graph result listing the ability to refine the result listing is given.

Looking for a new job or a contact that works at a company that you are trying to reach out to? Well, use the Work and Education filter on your result listing.

Do you want to know what friends like poker or opera music, play games using Facebook apps, or have similar likes and interests as you do? Social Graph search will help you with that.

Want to know who your single friends are that like soccer? Now’s your chance to find out! Watch out Match.com

What about all the people at your work that like Marijuana! Now that’s would be interesting, huh

Graph search is just beginning, and I’m excited to see what the possibilities are. Stand by for more insights from the McAfee Institute!

Below are five common scams on social networking sites, as reported recently by security company Symantec:

Chain Letters
You’ve likely seen this one before – the dreaded chain letter has returned. It may appear in the form of, “Retweet this and Bill Gates will donate $5 million to charity!” Chances are, Bill Gates doesn’t need to post a chain letter to get a list of users or like-minded donors. Many well-meaning people pass these fake claims onto others. Break the chain and let the person who sent it to you know it’s likely to be a scam.

Cash Grabs
By their very nature, social media sites make it easy for us to stay in touch with friends, while reaching out to meet new ones. But how well do you really know these new acquaintances? That person with the attractive profile picture who just “friended” you and suddenly needs money is probably a thief looking for easy cash. Think twice before sending any money or even corresponding with this person. Sometimes an email comes from a “friend” who lost their wallet and needs you to send money right away. While this might be true, be wary as computers infected with malware often take a user’s contact list and send a bogus email to everyone on it. If you aren’t sure, call your friend and make sure to run an anti-virus program on your own computer.

Hidden Charges
“What type of STAR WARS character are you? Find out with our quiz! All of your friends have taken it!” Many users get duped by a seemingly-innocuous link like this. After you enter your name and phone number, you’ll not only find out that you are more Yoda than Darth Vader, you’ve also just unwittingly subscribed to service that charges $9.95 a month. These bait-and-switch scams tend to thrive on social sites.

Phishing Requests
The ever-popular phishing requests have become prevalent on social networking sites. You might get a message on your wall that says “Somebody just put up these pictures of you! Check ‘em out here!” If you click on the enclosed link, it will take you to your Twitter or Facebook login page. Stop! Once you enter your account information, a cyber criminal now has your password, along with total control of your account. Both the email and landing page were fake.

Hidden URLs
Beware of blindly clicking on shortened URLs. You’ll see them everywhere on Twitter, but you never know where you’re going to go since the URL (“Uniform Resource Locator,” the Web address) hides the full location. Clicking on such a link could direct you to your intended site, or it could be one that installs all sorts of malware on your computer. URL shorteners can be useful but be aware of their potential pitfalls and make sure you have real-time protection against spyware and viruses.

Social networking – whether it be Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter or something else – is fast becoming a way of life for millions of people to share information about themselves for personal or business reasons. Many businesses for example are now embracing benefits in social networking to bring them closer to their customers and improve brand experience.

While the services have advantages they also pose risks to businesses, ranging from data disclosure to malware infection and copyright infringement. Our new Anti Social Networking factsheet provides awareness about the risks and threats of social networking and advises businesses on how to avoid these unwanted consequences.

As an employee, here are some top tips to protect yourself and your employers from the risks associated with social media:

- Read carefully and in full the privacy policy. To learn how to set your privacy settings in Facebook watch the videos to the right.
- Pay attention to what personal information you post and upload.
- Avoid reputational risk by thinking about what comments or material you post about your work place.
- Verify all your contacts – are your connections or friends really who they say they are?
- Use your personal e-mail address.

How to use Facebook securely in your business

by Richard Allen, Director of European Public Policy, Facebook

For businesses looking to protect themselves from e-Crime, there are a number of ways that both individual employees and businesses as a whole can protect themselves on Facebook and the wider web.

Many businesses create a Page on Facebook to share information, interact with fans, and create a highly engaging presence on Facebook. Facebook Pages are distinct from personal profiles – they have been designed to enable businesses to communicate, distribute content, engage with their fans, and capture new audiences virally through their fans’ recommendations to their friends. There are a number of things businesses can do to make sure their Pages are a true representation of themselves:

Unofficial Pages

- Search your business on Facebook to see who is talking about it. Unofficial groups or Pages can be a great way for consumers to talk about your services or products with their friends, but if you are not comfortable with any of these unofficial representations then you can report them for infringing on your intellectual property here: http://www.facebook.com/security#!/legal/copyright.php- To create your own Page, simply click on the “Create a page” link under the Sign Up section of www.facebook.com, or visit: http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

For further information on Pages, look at our help centre: http://www.facebook.com/help/#!/help/?page=175

Managing your Page

- Use your privacy controls to manage any Pages or Groups you set up. If anyone is posting content that violates our terms of use you can use your admin controls to block or ban them and you can also report them through the reporting links on the site http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=911

Individual security

Don’t forget to protect your personal account as well. The Facebook Security Page (www.facebook.com/security) has lots of hints and tips on how to protect yourself from crime online. You can also find further information on how to stay safe on our Safety Centre (www.facebook.com/safety)

Here are some tips that will help you secure your account:

- Use different passwords for your various online accounts.
- Be wary of where you enter your password. Just because a page on the Internet looks like Facebook or another site you use, it doesn’t mean that it is. Check the address bar in your browser, and learn to tell the difference between a good URL and a bad one. If you ever have doubts about the legitimacy of a link, simply type the website’s URL (for example, http://www.facebook.com) into the address bar.
- Don’t share your passwords with anyone and make sure you logout correctly if you are on a shared computer
- Don’t click on links or open attachments in suspicious emails. If the email looks weird, don’t trust it, and delete it from your inbox immediately, even if it’s been sent on by friends.
- Use a complex password that can’t be easily guessed. Avoid common words, and make sure your password is at least eight characters long and includes capital and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Be suspicious of any email or message that contains an urgent request or asks you to update your information or provide new information.
- Be suspicious of emails or messages that contain misspellings or use bad grammar, especially if they’re from someone who is usually a good writer.
- Make sure you have an up-to-date web browser equipped with an anti-phishing blacklist. Some examples are Internet Explorer 8.0 and Firefox 3.0.10.
- Make sure you have up-to-date comprehensive security software on your computer that includes anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-phishing, and a firewall.
- Make sure you’ve listed a security question and answer for your online accounts. This will come in handy if you ever lose access and need to prove who you are. You can do this on Facebook from the Account Settings page. You should also add a mobile phone number from this page, which will help if we ever need to send you a text message to confirm your identity.

Privacy

Remember that you choose what you share and with whom you share it. Think before you post, especially if the information is sensitive or personal in nature. You can learn more about how to control your information on Facebook, including how to choose an audience for each and every post you make, in our Privacy Guide.

Loving what you do for a living is an admirable trait. It’s something most of us aspire to. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with letting everyone know how much you like your job.

Except maybe if you’re flashing cash you allegedly stole from that very same job.

A bright spark in Alpharetta, Ga., thought it’d be a good idea to wave around a wad of cash money in a Facebook photo. He said “I love my job,” according to Patch. That’s gauche, but harmless, in most cases.

However, in this particular case, police were called to a Walmart store by a loss prevention officer. An employee apparently took $3,180 from a cash register over several days.

Only two cashiers used that register on the days on days money was missing— a loss of between $160 and $780 on each of the days. The loss prevention officer showed police security footage of a man dipping into cash registers and dropping it into his pocket.

A Walmart employee who is Facebook friends with the suspect, 21-year-old Beshaw U. Ogbonna, came forward with photos of him flashing cash. Ogbonna was arrested and now faces felony theft charges.

Ogbonna’s arrest follows the case of a Milwaukee dad who is accused of dodging child support after flashing his own wad of cash on Facebook.

Maybe bragging on Facebook about your fat wallet isn’t the brightest move after all.

Learn how to identify employee theft on social media websites with the McAfee Institute today. Look at our upcoming events; eCrime Investigations and Social Media Investigations, today to get the same result.

The world is filled with people who make lots of wealth in questionable ways — drug dealers, con artists, dishonest business men, politicians on the take, and so on. If you measure success simply by how much money you make, then you must realize that people who accumulate riches in a dishonest manner lack something that is the true mark of success — character and integrity.

No amount of wealth can compensate for a lack of character. Character equals integrity and integrity means you always do what is right — even when no one is watching you. It means that fear and guilt are all but eliminated from your life because you have nothing to hide and nothing to hold you back from achieving success in the true definition of the word.

In a practical sense, this means you practice the “golden rule” by doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. In your daily life, there are numerous opportunities for you to make this rule a part of your routine. Think about it. Have you ever been tempted to shortcut your way to the top of the corporate ladder? Reaching this goal is a wonderful achievement, but take a look around you. Are the hallways in your office building stacked high with the bodies of people you stepped on in order to get there? If so, be prepared to get stepped on in return.

Do you routinely treat people with honesty and respect? Or do you have a short temper when it comes to dealing with people who refuse to bow down to your every wish and command? The person with character and integrity will never have to worry about this because they know that no one achieves success single-handedly. Whether it’s success in the business world or sports or family life, someone was probably there to offer a helping hand somewhere along the way. The person with character and integrity will know and appreciate this and offer the same helping hand when the opportunity arises.

Celebrated portrait photographer, Yousuf Karsh, was famous for photographing celebrities and world leaders. He explained, “I have found that great people do have in common an immense belief in themselves and their mission. They also have great determination as well as an ability to work hard. At the crucial moment of decision, they draw upon their accumulated wisdom. Above all, they have integrity.”

It is important that you take a good look at your attitude regarding what success means to you. Albert Einstein said, “Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.”

Character is what you are. Success is what you achieve. What you achieve can be large or small, but success without character and integrity is merely a shadow. Your character is the key to success and it is the attribute you will pass on to your children. So let your strength of character shine through in all you do and say and you will truly be able to achieve meaningful success in life.

Here are ten traits that any great employer should recognize and reward instantly.

As a longtime employer of dozens, I was always grateful to have good employees. It takes a lot to recruit and maintain top talent. Every once in a while special employees come along that just really seem to get it. They drive the entire company forward in ways that were unimaginable. Advancement and reward is never an issue for these rock stars because they understand the power of cause and effect, and only a worthy company can retain them and afford them.

Here are 10 things amazing employees seem to do effortlessly. Here’s how to help your great employees be even more amazing.

1. Enthusiastically Learn All Aspects of Business

They understand they’re part of something bigger and more worthwhile than just their job. They look to learn other areas of the business and be fluent in finance and management so they’ll positively impact multiple areas of the company.

What you can do: Invest in material and seminars on business basics like accounting, marketing, and management so all employees have easy access to learn and grow.

2. Steward the Company

They treat the company as if it were theirs. They look to make prudent decisions about expenses and opportunities with the long-term future of the company in mind. They easily assess risk vs. reward, selflessly when making decisions.

What you can do: Be transparent in your business. The more you share your financials and philosophy, the easier it is for employees to make the right decisions.

3. Generate Viable Opportunities

You don’t have to be in sales or marketing to help a company grow. Strong networkers from all divisions see company growth as a collective effort and constantly keep their eyes open for ways to more than pay for themselves.

What you can do: Make sure all your employees understand your value proposition and can easily identify opportunities. Then reward them openly for their efforts.

4. Resolve Issues Before They Are Issues

My favorite days running companies are when I notice positive change in procedure when I was totally unaware of the need for change. Amazing employees are always looking to improve systems proactively, and they do.

What you can do: Communicate a clear written vision of where the company is going and encourage initiative so people feel safe and empowered to make change.

5. Tell It Like It Is

Amazing employees understand that hiding bad news helps no one. They find kind ways to bring uncomfortable information to the surface, but they DO bring it to the surface. They tell people what’s necessary before major damage is done.

What you can do: Foster an open communication environment where people are not only given permission to tell the truth, but also absolutely required.

6. Demonstrate High Standards, With Low Maintenance

I always feel relaxed when I can trust an employee to perform a task to the same high standards I would expect from myself. Not all can do this without constant attention or difficulty. Amazing employees quietly drive their own high standards.

What you can do: Set the example and the tone for high performance with minimal drama. Publicly reward those who can execute in the same manner.

7. Grow Themselves, and Others

They not only drive their own career but they inspire others to do the same. These employees lead by example in how to advance without creating animosity or resentment. They see and create their perfect future, and also bring others along.

What you can do: Encourage personal development and peer growth through dedicated group time and learning for career advancement.

8. Research, Apply, and Refine

No employer expects people to know everything. In this fast changing world, I choose employees who will learn over those who know. The best employee proactively explores options, takes action and then improves without direction from the top.

What you can do: Invest time in exploration and expansive thinking. Encourage people to explore deep visionary projects with time and reward for the findings.

9. Stimulate Happiness

Amazing employees aren’t always sunshine and roses. They do know how to keep it real. But they understand the dynamics of people, stress, and the blend of work, life and friendship. They are self-aware and able to direct their own path that brings out their best with family, friends and career. They exude positive energy even in stressful times and share it around, making for a happier office.

What you can do: Create an environment where people can openly express themselves. Encourage them to work hard in fulfilling ways and achieve their dreams.

10. Facilitate Amazing Bosses

Amazing employees make me grow as an employer. They self-confidently get their value and help me get mine. They make me want to be worthy of working with somebody of such high caliber, without ever saying it directly of course.

What you can do: Make effort to genuinely show appreciation for any of the behaviors above so people feel their value and will grow to full potential. Then they will do the same for you.

I believe it is impossible for you to reach your potential without good mentorship in your life. I believe you need someone else to follow, besides yourself. I also believe “none of us” is as smart “as of all us.” Most of my great thinking has been done with someone else.

Someone once said to me “Josh, don’t you think I can discover how to be successful on my own,” and of course you can. If you can live a few thousand years. Here is what I know; the quickest way to grow is to learn from others, who are successful. That’s why I continually put myself in a position to be taught.

For example, for 6 years now I have what we call learning lunches. I have one at least one, if not three a month. By learning lunches, I basically make it a point to go see someone and I buy their lunch. And while they eat I am asking them questions. That’s how I learned the law of the lid.

When you read the law of the lid, which has become the most famous leadership law of all, I want you to know that I learned this law from a learning lunch. On this particular day I was in Saint Louis, MO with a guy name John Thomas he was the CEO of a huge company that buys companies that were going bankrupt. I would see him once a month for two hours and I would ask questions about his leadership style and he would share his insights with me.

I remember asking him, “John, when you buy a bankrupt company, is there something you always do.” And I remember he looked at me and he said, “yes there is two things I always do.” I thought oh my goodness he’s going to teach me two things, this is going to be great!

- He said, “We go into all of these companies and we teach the employees relationship skills and provide training.” “Because 90% of people in these types of organizations have had a bad experience with another employee and we teach them how to deal with it.”

I thought this is great; I am taking notes, and when I get back to my organization I need to teach my people about relationship skills.

- He said “number two we always fire the president.”

I looked at him and said, “Wait a minute you always fire the president.” Now I didn’t write that down. I was thought what does that mean. He said “we always fire the president” I asked him “you don’t ask them there side of the story, you don’t go see them, take them to coffee, etc. “He said “no, I don’t even want to meet them, we just fire them.”

I said, “why you do that?” He said, “It is quite simple, if the president was any good, he wouldn’t be bankrupt.”

You know what he taught me that day, the law of the lid. Almost everything I write about and teach about, I learn from someone else. Putting yourself with somebody, under somebody, is essential. Now I also say you need to have several mentors not just one mentor, because I don’t think one mentor is smart enough to teach you everything.

So when people ask me, would you be my mentor I say it depends. I ask them what do you want me to mentor you in? I only do 4 things well. I am great in only 4 areas. One of the mistakes that successful people make, is that they think because the know something on one subject; they think they know something on every subject. And I can tell you that’s simply not the truth.

If I was to tell share with you some advice. When you begin to look for a mentor, only go to mentors that are good in an area that you want to be successful in. I think you are better off going to several mentors like I said.

I have mentors in 4 areas:

1. Personal relationships
2. Business
3. Leadership
4. Finance

You simply need to find a few mentors that have unique and different strengths and you go to them. Now I have three things I look for when I need a mentor:

1. Successful: They have to be successful in what I want to accomplish. I am not taking advice from someone that isn’t successful. If I want to sit down and take notes from you, you better be good. Listen to me carefully; there is not one of you that are going to take notes from me on how to dance. Now I have taken dance lessons, but I can’t dance. You do not need to take dancing lessons from me.

2. Do they care for me? Because if you are going to mentor someone you really have to like them. Same thing if you are going to be mentored, you have to like the person. There has to be a chemistry to come together. You are letting them into your life, you will be vulnerable, and the person has to be passionate about your success and best interest.

3. Are they teachable themselves? If they are teachable, they are fresh in their thinking. They are always learning. That is what I want in a mentor. I don’t want you to tell me what you have done in the past or what you have learned from your mistakes. Passion comes out of what you are doing now, not what you have done. All of the energy comes into what are you learning now, how are you growing, and what you are doing in the now.

When we think about how to achieve success, we often focus on the skills and habits we should add to our lives. But sometimes the key to success actually lies in our ability to give up certain habits and behaviors. So starting today…

1. Give up the habit of waiting. – The way you spend your time defines who you are. You don’t get to choose how you are going to die, or when; you can only decide how you are going to live right now. Trust me, a year from now you will wish you had started today. Read The Now Habit.

2. Give up the excuses. – Sooner or later you will come to realize that it’s not what you lose along the way that counts; it’s what you do with what you still have. When you let go, forgive, and move on, you in no way change the past, you change the future.

3. Give up trying to be perfect. – Sometimes we try to show the world that we are flawless in hopes that we will be liked and accepted by everyone. But we can’t please everyone, and we shouldn’t try. The beauty of us lies in our vulnerability, our love, our complex emotions – our authentic imperfections. When we embrace who we are and decide to be authentic, instead of perfect, we open ourselves up to real relationships, real happiness, and real success. There is no need to put on a mask. There is no need to pretend to be someone you’re not. You are perfectly imperfect just the way you are.

4. Give up doing things you know are wrong. – Nothing is more damaging to you than doing something that you believe is wrong. Your beliefs alone don’t help you grow and thrive, your behavior and actions do. So always do what you know in your heart is right, for you.

5. Give up feelings of entitlement. – Nobody owes you anything. When you approach life with the false sense that you are owed things, you will naturally become less productive and constantly find yourself disappointed by reality. When you are grateful for what you have, and see positive things as bonuses, versus owed entitlements, you will earn great successes gradually as you grow. Read The Road Less Traveled.

6. Give up relationships that want you to be someone else. – The best kind of relationship is the one that makes you a better person without changing you into someone other than yourself.

7. Give up letting others decide what you can and can’t do. – In order to live your own authentic life, you have to follow YOUR inner GPS, not someone else’s. When others say, “You can’t do it!” or “That’s impossible,” don’t lose hope. Just because they couldn’t doesn’t mean you can’t.

8. Give up being a helpless victim. – Yes, it is unfortunate that sometimes bad things happen to the best of people. Life can be unfair, unkind and unjust. However, being stuck in a victim mentality does not nurture your ability to move onward and upward. You’ve got to stand back up and take positive steps to heal and grow.

9. Give up worrying about past failures. – Accept your past without regret, handle your presence with confidence, and face your future without fear. You are today where your thoughts and actions have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts and actions take you. Read How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.

10. Give up blaming everyone else. – Either you own your situation or it will own you. Either you take responsibility for your life, or someone else will. Blame is a scapegoat – it’s an easy way out of taking accountability for your own outcome. It’s a lot easier to point the finger at someone or something else instead of looking within. Blame is not constructive; it does not help you or anyone else – nobody wins in the blame game. The amount of energy and stress it takes to place blame elsewhere takes away from your ability to move forward and find a real solution.

And remember, the road you are traveling may be the more challenging one, but don’t lose faith. Don’t listen to the doubters, don’t let setbacks keep you down, and most of all, don’t give up on yourself.

It’s okay if you don’t know how much more you can handle. It’s fine if you don’t know exactly what to do next. Eventually you’ll let go of how things ‘should be’ and start to see all the great possibilities in front of you. This is your life – grab the wheel with both hands and keep steering yourself in the right direction.
